Maternity Session: How to Prepare

Use this session as an opportunity to pamper yourself prior! Your hands will be prominent in the photos, so please have a manicure, and a pedicure too. Apply face powder to reduce shiny spots and, if possible, please refrain from wearing make-up containing spf because it will add shine to your face. It is a good idea to moisturize knees and elbows and any other ‘rough’ spots. At least three days prior to your session, make sure to wax, tweeze, or shave unwanted hair from your eyebrows, upper lip, full leg, bikini line and underarms – we can’t stress that enough.

We have a beautiful collection of flowing, colorful maternity gowns and gorgeous flower crowns for you to choose from! Many of the gowns boast a long train that will flow behind you, and a slit in the middle of the gown to show-off your belly. Some are strapless, so you may want to bring a nude-colored strapless bra along for your session. Some have a semi-sheer skirt, so be sure to wear flattering boy-short or thong underwear that don’t pinch at your waist to allow for the dress to flow smoothly around your curves. We’ll work together to find the perfect gown to show off your pregnancy!

Tops should be formfitting, especially around the bust line. When choosing your clothes prior to the session, think of tops that cover your breasts yet expose your belly. The idea is to showcase your beautiful shape, and oversized tops will make you look heavier and hide your curves. If you’d like a more casual look, please bring along jeans (maternity jeans have fold-over fabric) and a pretty top. It is so important that you feel comfortable, so choose clothes that you feel good in. We’ll see what works and what doesn’t as the session progresses. Though you may end up barefoot, bring heels (for improved posture when posing) and comfortable shoes for walking (for outdoor sessions). This is a great opportunity to wear a pretty bra-panty set underneath your clothes, to feel feminine and pretty. For studio sessions, depending on your comfort level, we may photograph you in the nude to showcase your beautiful form, or drape you in flowing fabric.

Feel free to bring with you any props with meaning to you, a pair of hand-knitted booties or an ultrasound picture, for example. We would love to work together to incorporate them into your portraits.

A day prior to your maternity session, you should remove anything that can leave behind elastic or strap marks on your skin. This includes tight waistbands, undergarments, watches (your spouse as well), even socks. It is best not to use lotion on your belly the day of the session, a shiny belly does not photograph well. Limit jewelry to essential pieces, it is wonderful to include special pieces but too much can be distracting.

Your spouse may want to wear jeans or slacks and a wrinkle-free button down, polo or T-shirt in solid colors with clean lines. Your children may want to wear clothes they are comfortable in. Think of dressing them one step-up from their normal clothes. Try to avoid loud patterns, characters and logos.

Try to find time to rest before your session and have a light meal. The same goes for your child(ren) who are joining you for the session. When you are tired, cranky and hungry it shows and we want you to have a wonderful, relaxed session. Please bring snacks, and a few books/toys as they will not be in all the shots and we want them to feel comfortable and entertained while they wait. Prior to the session, please prepare them for the session as much as possible depending on their age. Let them know they will have their picture taken with you and your belly and most importantly that they can be themselves – a promise of ice cream at the end of the session usually helps!

Please be on time and don’t schedule any appointments or activities directly following your session. Portraiture requires a good amount of time and you don’t want to rush through your session.

We want you to love the session experience with Rivka and most importantly the end result. If you have a vision of the type of images you want to achieve, email us examples you found online or in a magazine prior to your session. We love to plan, brainstorm and innovate.

Hope you are looking forward to your session as much as we are!!
